tutorial on navigating in the training modules

Module Structure

The Training Modules have a common structure that is similar amongst all of the modules. A module will be made up of units. Typically there will be 3-6 units per module. A description of the currently available Training Modules, the number of units in each module, and the topics covered in that module is available here.

Sequence of Modules and Units

Modules do not have to be taken in any particular order. However, within a module the units are sequential and must be taken in order. You may have more that one module in progress at the time, but only one unit may be open at any particular moment.

Progress Tracking

When you log in to your account, the home page will list the available modules and there will a bar graph under each module title showing your progress in that module. When you open a module you will be directed to the next unit in that module.

Please be aware that some Internet Explorer browser versions will not display these tracking bars. Even though your progress bar graphs are not visible, your progress is still being tracked and when you open a module you will be taken to the appropriate unit.

If you Need to Pause

If you need to stop for any reason while in a unit, there is Pause link at the top right of each page that will allow you to pause. If you do not use this Pause option, the site will disconnect you if you have not made any responses after a certain amount of time. Even if you use the Pause option at some point the server will automatically disconnect you if you have been idle.

Unit Structure

Each unit will have 4-7 pages of content. Each page of content will be followed by a Key Point. In addition, at the end of theunit there will be a Review question for each page. A typical unit should take ten minutes or less to complete. After starting a unit, you must complete that unit including all review questions. At the end of the unit you will have the opportunity to save that unit.

Content Page Structure

A page of content will introduce and explain a topic. There may be accompanying photos. Once you have read and absorbed the content on this page, you may move to the Key Point question. Mouse users may click on the Next button. Keyboard users may hit the Enter key.

Key Point Structure

After the content, the next page the will be a Key Point. The Key Point is a question that will focus on the central idea of the page of content. It will always ask you to select the "Best" answer. It will typically be a True or False question. It may be a multiple choice question. You should always read all the answers. The question may have have multiple correct answers, the last answer might say "All the above answers are true." Therefore, Items # 1, # 2, and # 3 may all be true, making # 4 is the "Best" answer.

Selecting an "Radio Button"

The answers will always have "radio buttons" for selection. Thus, only one button may be selected. If you choose an answer and then wish to change the answer, you may simply select another button. Once you are sure of your answer, you will select the Next button at the bottom of the page. This submits your answer and takes you to a feedback page that tells you whether or not your answer was correct. There will typically be a feedback regarding the correct information.

Mouse users: you may select a button by left clicking on it. The color will change to indicate that it has been selected. If you are sure of your selection, click on the Next button to go to the answer page.

Keyboard users: you will use the Tab key to move through the selections. Typically, upon landing on the page, clicking Tab will take you to the Pause link. (It is possible that you will have hit Tab multiple times to get to Pause). You will know that the "focus" is on the Pause link because it will have a dotted box around it.

A second Tab will move the "focus" to the answer # 1 and there will be a dotted box showing "focus".

If you wish to select answer # 1, hit the Space Bar and the button will be selected. The button now has a green center showing that it has been selected. You may move to other answers with the Up and Down Arrows.

Once you have selected your answer and are sure of it, Hit Enter to submit your answer and to move to the answer page.
